Zion National Park, Utah, USA
The Towers of the Virgin form a remarkable buttress of pastel walls against an azure sky. When photographed at first light the result is surreal. This was my second trip to Zion and my first attempt to photograph the park. I was there in early February during an especially cold and clear spell of weather. The morning I took this photograph it was 12°F and windy. Somewhat warm in comparison to the previous night I spent in Great Basin National Park (Nevada) where the temperature dropped to -2ºF, but the Great Basin provides an opportunity for viewing a remarkable night sky that makes it well worth braving the cold. Nikon D800, 24-70mm, F11, 1/30 sec, 3 image pano blended in Photoshop.
